Networking Opportunities

Networking Opportunities

In this module, you begin laying the foundation for your academic and professional success. Your efforts begin with a vision that includes your own definition of success. Your vision may vary from those of your colleagues, but this does not mean you have to take these first steps alone.

Walden University and the College of Nursing also have a vision and mission, which include helping you to make your own vision a reality. Members of your new academic community, such as faculty, support teams, and fellow students, can also be helpful. Current practitioners and other member of the professional community can also help you to clarify your vision.

This Module’s Discussion asks you to consider how the Walden mission and vision as well as the College of Nursing’s mission and vision apply to your professional and academic goals. You will also begin to identify individuals and teams who can help you along the way as you begin designing the “blueprint”—your Academic Success and Professional Development Plan—that will guide you toward your own vision for academic and professional success. Finally, you will explain the importance of networking and how it can help you achieve your professional and academic goals.

Note: Unless otherwise noted, initial postings to Discussions are due on or before Day 3, and response postings are due on or before Day 6. You are required to participate in the Discussion on at least three different days (a different day for main post and each response). It is important to adhere to the weekly time frame to allow others ample time to respond to your posting. In addition, you are expected to respond to questions directed toward your own initial posting in a timely manner.

Main question

Hello:

My name is Dania Viera I am a mother of two daughters and a grandmother of a beautiful toddler boy of three years of age. I currently have a master’s in nursing education that I received 5 years ago through another university in which I also completed my bachelor’s degree in nursing. I have been a registered nurse since 2012 and before that accomplishment, I was an LVN/LPN for 5 years before receiving my RN. I currently have two jobs; I work full time as a charge RN in a med-surg unit at a hospital in California and I also have been employed at a community college as a clinical’s instructor.

Nurse practitioner is something I have always wanted to do but the busyness of life, the birth of my grandbaby, and weddings of my two kids have gotten in the way of my professional goals. Since I did have kids at a young age, I felt very guilty about my accomplishments because those were in sacrifice of my kids’ time. With this new goal, I didn’t want to sacrifice my grandson’s time, and I wanted to enjoy every time I could with him. I now decided to continue my academic goals to accomplish that desire to practice as an NP with specializing in psychiatric health. My goals are to work in addiction medicine for adults and assist in this pandemic disease of addiction. I also want to continue my education acquire a Family medicine NP and continue with a doctorate in Nursing Practice. Hopefully to finish all those goals by the age of 50. I know that age should not be a limit, but I need to place time constraints on my goals, so I stay focused and don’t try to deviate from the road.

Reviewing the university website, I can understand the requirements for a preceptor during my practicum and the qualifications for site requirements (Walden University, n.d.) This information allows me to get familiarized with the needed requirements ahead of time and prepare for my practicum to accomplish my goals as a practitioner.

I have noticed all the available departments to help in my success as a student on the school’s website. Career planning and development is one of my favorites, as a new practitioner, it is of great help that I receive help with job placement and career planning resources (Walden University, n.d.)  This department will guide me in the hunt for new opportunities in my desired field of psychiatry NP.

Networking is extremely important in this field of healthcare. In nursing we are all aware by now that is not the job of one but a team of collaborating healthcare individuals to achieve the desired health goal for a patient as an individual and or the family that surrounds this patient. To achieve my goals, I would have to network with other NP who have gone through the program for clinical sites, school resources, and departments for placement in clinical rotations as well as with counselors, other students, and our professors. Every professional connection should be based on interactions that involve knowledge sharing and mutual professional development (Schmidt, K, n.d.)

It takes a team to make a nurse, and it makes a greater team to make a Nurse Practitioner.

Reply from Christopher Mccoy

My name is Christopher McCoy, and I am a Registered Nurse in the State of California, where my primary job currently is a Director of Nursing in a hospital setting, and my academic goal for my MSN is to be a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner.

Walden’s vision, mission, goals and social change initiatives relate to my professional & academic goals to becoming a scholar practitioner, in that one of my number one priority in nursing administration is improving staff retention rates.   In essence Walden contributes to social change by ensuring deliberate efforts to enhance the confidence, sense of worth, and progress of individuals. (Walden University, n.d.)

To further elaborate I believe my staff retention goals aligns with Walden’s social change as this writer confidently believes that a consequence of positive staff retention, is that of improved quality of care, due to more thoroughly trained Nurses which ultimately reduces risk potential.  Therefore, throughout this academic journey for my MSN I hope to learn more about strategies for retention of a team, for the patient’s ultimate benefit.  Then, essentially an improved staff retention outcome would be synonymous with Walden’s University Outcomes to impact positive social change in my community. (Walden University, n.d.)

On that note, networking is very important in my experience in the recruitment of quality nursing candidates whom we would like to hire and certainly of whom we would like to stay with us.  The networking should start with a genuine expression of what it is that our nursing administration stands for as it relates to servant leadership and heart for patients.  The goal of initiating this conversation up front is intended to attract like-minded nursing professionals who can unify with that vision, and contribute to a dynamically efficient team environment.

One key behavior in my career so far has been in maintaining a long list of people within the profession, and always making sure to be of service to them if I can, even if in little ways and this practice keeps the relationships refreshed and on the forefront of ones consciousness. (Schmidt, K, n.d.).  Next, if that individual has a positive impression whoever is engaging in networking, they are more likely to suggest their friend or family in the same field who may need a job, reducing the risk for being short staffed be a quicker fill-rate of the positions.

The promises of the power of networking do sound attractive, however in the start of my career I was shy to do so.  However after I took the courage to start building a network, eventually through practicing the networking process, unique career opportunities developed such as working as a Registered Nurse Expert Witness, and other unexpected positive career changes including staff gravitating to work at certain jobs where I worked.  Academically the process of networking at Walden University will also help if I am having difficulty understanding an assignment and a fellow colleague is able to lend assistance.  In general however, I require more practicing in the networking space, however, with practice I can improve the growth my networking to find quality staff who are more likely to be retained by our nursing administration, as it relates to my professional goals. Main Question Post:

Hello everyone, I am Jodian Watson, Jamaican born and the last of 5 siblings. It has always been my dream to help others and the journey to becoming a nurse has helped me to achieve that, I have been serving in the profession for 16 years. With this next step of attaining my MSN, Women’s Health or Family NP I will be able to reach the subset group dear to my heart, women and children.

At the heart of every professional is the pride of a job well done, to be the best they can be and be a learning resource for their colleagues. (Faubion, 2024) defines integrity as a quality, of being fair and honest, having strong moral principles, or having a firm adherence to a code of moral values. Integrity in nursing practice means keeping confidences, practicing forthrightness, and having an overall sense of trustworthiness. Walden University embodies these qualities and is steered by a governing body who constantly ensures their students attain their best in their chosen fields, making them formidable change agents in their community. My professional goals align with Walden’s because as a future Family NP I aim to make an impact. (Hemma, 2019) puts it nicely when she sates professional networking in nursing is not just about what everyone can gain but most importantly the attainment and dissemination of knowledge, research development and new discoveries in nursing.

Professional Networking is something I have been doing since I graduated from nursing school, it seems to be a course we all learnt without ever giving it a title. Mingling with different specialties during our training period, exchanging ideas and opinions and being exposed to a facet of modalities that later shaped the field I chose as an experienced nurse. (Porter et al., 2023) gives a great definition, professional networking involves a series of goal directed interpersonal interactions that build and maintain professional relationships and include the exchange of work and career benefitting resources. Looking back at my nursing journey, it is clear to me professional networking has brought me to where I am now. New business ideas have developed from participating in discussions, my nursing field has been diversified from medical surgical to midwifery and psychiatry from interacting in various professional groups and nursing associations. Starting this journey with Walden will deepen my cultural, professional and intellectual diversity.

Others looking in may say I have achieved a lot in my career by becoming a nurse, it has awarded me many opportunities I would not have attained otherwise. However, I cannot see it as my own definition of success until I am able to contribute and utilize my skillset and experiences to help advance the care of the subset of the population I care most about.

Main Question Post

Hello all,

My name is MaryAnn and have worked primary in a skilled nursing facility (SNF). My professional goal is to become a nurse practitioner and open a practice. Opening this practice will move me away from the older patients that I am used to taking care of but am I open for new challenges. After some research, I came across Walden University.

As I looked more at the university, Walden’s vision and purpose statement spoke to me. I knew I had decided well. Walden’s vision, mission, goals and social change initiatives relate to my professional and academic goals by having updated education that can be implemented in what I will practice improving my career in the field as I seek greater knowledge and understanding with the use of critical thinking to provide enhanced treatment for my patients (Walden University, n.d.).

Walden’s outcomes align with my goals as I am committed to growing professionally and enhancing and improving my professional knowledge and skills. Learning outcome number six showing continuous dedication to professional development and respect of nursing theories/ethical principles (altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity, social justice) in line with morally responsible, legally liable, expert nursing practice (Walden University, n.d.) truly aligns with what I am striving for.

One definition of a social network is a system of interpersonal contacts and events (Schmidt, K, n.d.). Networking offers access to opportunities, information exchange, support system building, visibility enhancement, and provision of useful resources, which is a potent instrument for both academic and professional goals attainment. Through proactive networking, you improve your chances for success, fulfillment, and job advancement as well as for academic progress.

Throughout my career as a nurse, I have met some truly knowledgeable people who have now become lifelong friends. I will utilize their support and knowledge throughout my journey here at Walden.

Reply from Leslie Sama

Hi everyone. My name is Leslie. I am very thrilled to be at Walden University and to be a part of this great program. I have been practicing as a family nurse practitioner for the past five years, and my specialty is Leukemia/Lymphoma and stem cell transplants. Now I am pursing the psychiatric Nurse practitioner pathway. I have had great experiences given the challenges of this field. Still, I have to say that these challenges have been rewarding since they have fueled my passion for advancing my education to ensure that my impact in healthcare progresses. The complexities that come with oncology care have made me realize how important it is to learn continuously and the need to be in a better position to address the ever-evolving challenges our healthcare systems continue to witness. This is basically what has led me to further educate myself.

This institution has a vision of creating a community of learning where the application of knowledge in the solving of critical societal challenges is in perfect resonance with my academic and professional goals. The mission of this university is to empower career professionals like me into scholar-practitioners, which is in perfect alignment with my desire to make a positive change in society. Furthermore, Walden’s goal is to ensure that it provides a multi-contextual, learner-cantered education. This is a reflection of my commitment to ensuring I am in a better position to integrate my academic learning with my professional experiences to foster professional excellence in critical thinking and research.

This university emphasizes social change. I particularly find this inspiring. For me, deliberately creating and putting strategies into use that improve social and human conditions is the cornerstone of what nursing should look like. I am personally committed to being a very reflective nurse who frequently contributes to the improvement of society both at work and beyond.

The MSN program at Walden has been designed to provide graduates with the necessary skills in the facilitation of positive social change, which is the pillar of my professional aspirations. Some of the outcomes of the program, such as ethical integrity, commitment to lifelong learning, and the ability to apply the knowledge acquired through the specific challenges encountered in the field, are crucial for me as I develop my role as a nurse leader. I believe that the outcomes above will help me be in a better position to address complex issues in healthcare, contribute to the advancement of the nursing practice through evidence-based approaches, and advocate for patients to ensure they receive better outcomes.

Throughout my practice, I have realized that one of the most essential aspects of achieving my academic and professional goals is through networking. Building connections with mentors, different healthcare practitioners, and colleagues is something that can help me acquire a diverse perspective, take part in collaborative initiatives that contribute to positive change, and share knowledge (Schmidt,2018). this institution places an extreme emphasis on collaboration and community. This, on its own, provides me with a unique opportunity to build the networks I really need to advance my academic, personal, and professional goals. I started this journey with much faith that my engagement with this vibrant academic and professional community will enhance my learning experiences and open those to opportunities that will be vital in helping me make the lasting impact in this field of nursing that I desire (Wofford, 2018).

Main Question Post:

Hello everyone! This is Irynne Grace Obmerga, you can call me “Irynne”. Like anyone else, I am also new to this online program, but I am excited and motivated in advancing my career when I get back to the workforce. The source of my inspiration is my young boys as they were also the reasons when I paused my nursing career in February 2022. I availed an early retirement at 50 years old from my government job as Nurse Manager after working for over 20 years.

I am currently enjoying my “transnational travel” as a retired nurse. I regularly traveled between California and the Philippines. During my hiatus years in nursing, it is an absolute honor for me to join the “Lions Club International” within my district. This organization shows me another life through a different lens. Immersion in giving service to humankind.

“Walden University’s mission is to provide a diverse community of career professionals with the opportunity to transform themselves as scholar-practitioners so that they can effect positive social change.” Walden University. (n.d.). Walden University catalogLinks to an external site.Links to an external site.. Retrieved October 4, 2019, from https://catalog.waldenu.eduLinks to an external site. Select Introduction, then the link “Vision, Mission, and Goals” under the Introduction header. Review Walden’s vision, mission

This mission truly resonates with me. I am driven by a deep commitment to give back to our community in my own little way.

Walden’s focus on “scholar-practitioner” learning aligns with my own educational and professional journey. The most meaningful change is to be able to bridge the gap between theory and practice, apply what you have learned in academic research to real-world challenges. In my previous role and my current responsibility, I had the opportunity to put this principle into action, collaborating with my colleagues and community partners to develop and implement data driven solutions to solve complex situations.

Walden University MSN Program Outcomes and perspectives relate to my academic and professional goals in many ways. It helps their students to develop professional excellence and be an agent of positive social change. (academics.waldenu.edu). The 3 core values highlighting Walden are quality, integrity, and student-centeredness that is vital in our daily experiences. This is another driving force for me to become empowered as a good leader and as a citizen.

I believe pursuing my degree in Walden can lead to a rewarding and impactful career, where I can make a tangible difference in the lives of those struggling with mental health challenges.

The nursing profession and healthcare in general is so huge that you cannot rely on yourself just to provide the needs of everyone, you must use your Network. According to Dr. Lynn Parsons, Department Chair Nursing at Morehead State University: In general, nurses still have a lot to learn in establishing “connections.”

I agree with her statement as it entails knowledge, confidence, maturity, and self-taught books to bring it out on me. When I became a Nurse Manager, I must embrace the responsibility that I read a lot of journals, books and watch you tube videos on leadership on how to connect with your staff and colleagues. I learned the importance of networking early in my career. (“Fernando Torres-Velez | School of Veterinary Medicine”) (“Fernando Torres-Velez | School of Veterinary Medicine”) My main mantra as a person is from my favorite author Robin Sharma, “be braver, be more present, be more excellent, be more inspirational, be more kind and be more human.”

I treat everyone with respect, and I value their work. I handled 2 medical-surgical units during pandemic as my co nurse manager got sick around that time but since I developed good connections with my staff and leaders, the work is there but remains manageable and rewarding. My former Medical-Surgical Chief Nursing Officer once even told me that I could unretire at any time.

I would say that professional networking does not happen like magic. It should start from within without initially seeking something in return. Be excellent in what you do and put your heart and compassion into your work and your relationship with your coworkers. Be an active and engaged listener. Reach out and attend conventions to expand your connections.

Consistent, strategic networking can help you build valuable connections and identify new career opportunities in nursing.

Main Question Post

Howdy everyone, my name is Stephanie Stephenson. I am 35 years old and live with my husband in Grand Junction, CO. I have been a bedside RN for 10+ years, making my way from MedSurg to Intensive Care Units, to Interventional Radiology and now PeriAnesthesia. I am currently the PeriAnesthesia Educator and floor RN in the hospital setting, serving multiple areas radiating out to 250 miles. I love the outdoors, riding dirtbikes, hunting, and reading.

As I pursue my journey to become a Nurse Practitioner, I am deeply committed to not only advancing my clinical skills but also making a meaningful impact on the communities I serve. Walden University’s vision, mission, goals, and social change initiatives resonate strongly with my professional and academic aspirations, offering a framework that supports both my personal growth and my desire to contribute positively to society. Walden’s vision of empowering students to make a difference in their professions and communities aligns seamlessly with my goal of becoming a Nurse Practitioner. The university’s mission echoes my own commitment to lifelong learning and professional development. I will be equipped with the skills and confidence to excel and apply knowledge in real-world settings. The university’s desire to produce graduates who can effect positive social change speaks directly to my ambition to improve patient outcomes. By gaining advanced clinical knowledge and developing leadership skills through Walden’s programs, I will be able to advocate for my patients effectively and implement evidence-based practices, making a significant impact on my patients lives and the healthcare system as a whole.

Walden’s MSN Program outcomes and perspectives relate to my professional and academic goals by developing my clinical expertise and provide scholarly insight in advanced nursing practice. I aspire to become a well-rounded scholar-practitioner, capable of making significant contributions to the nursing profession and whole healthcare system. One of the key outcomes of the Walden MSN program is the ability to integrate nursing theory, research, and evidence-based practice into advanced nursing roles. This aligns with my goal of becoming a highly skilled Nurse Practitioner that provides exceptional care by applying the latest research and best practices. Another outcome that aligns with my goals is the development of my leadership and collaborative skills that will aid me in advocating for my patients, contributing to quality improvement initiatives, and seek out further leadership opportunities. The program’s focus on integrating theory and practice, leadership, lifelong learning, cultural competence, and scholarly inquiry will equip me with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in advanced nursing practice. By achieving these outcomes, I will be well-prepared to make a meaningful impact on patient care, contribute to the nursing profession, and serve as a leader and advocate in the healthcare community.

As I work towards becoming a Nurse Practitioner, I recognize that networking will be a crucial element in my future success. Having been a part of multiple interdisciplinary teams throughout my career, I have utilized multiple relationships that were started by a simple email to being introduced through a colleague. Each job procurement and success in my career to date would not have occurred if not for the network I built. Having this prior knowledge, I recognize that networking is essential for me to achieve and advance my professional and academic goals through Walden’s MSN Program. Healthcare takes a village, and when you share a common goal, you in turn communicate effectively, become more cohesive and achieve unparalleled success. Carlson (2015) reaffirms that networking is a learned skill and once you empower yourself to be a better networker, your collaboration and growth in your career soar. I am confident that with all the resources Walden’s MSN Program offers and my prior experience and knowledge, I will continue to hone and advance my networking skills and achieve my professional and academic goal of becoming a Nurse Practitioner and a scholar-practitioner.

Post a brief introduction of yourself to your colleagues. Include an explanation as to how Walden’s vision, mission, goals, and social change initiatives relate to your professional and academic goals and to your becoming a scholar-practitioner. Also include an explanation for how the Walden MSN Program Outcomes and perspectives relate to your professional and academic goals and to your becoming a scholar-practitioner. Finally, explain why networking is important and how it may help you achieve your professional and academic goals.

Hello All,

My name is Francine Pilgrim and I have been an RN for too many years to count.  I recently completed my BSN degree with the explicit purpose of advancing to the MSN FNP program.  I chose Walden University for my graduate study because Walden is intentional about producing graduates that will make a positive impact on society thus enact social changes for the better.  Walden’s values of quality, integrity and student centeredness speaks of it’s commitment to a higher standards of excellence.

This is what I strive for for myself.  My aspirations require that I am educated by an organization that embodies substance and greatness.  My personal goals for the short term is to progress in my career to become a practicing family nurse practitioner.  This will then enable me to transition with that knowledge into my long term goal of maturing into a patient advocate and resource liaison for the citizens of my home country, for which there is a great need.  This, I hope, will my contribution to enabling positive societal change.  Even if it is not within the local USA.

According to Portia Wofford, founder of Your Nurse Connection, to accomplish this, networking should be key. It makes for a vital component of my nursing career.  Regardless the reason, building a safe professional network is essential. It can open up countless and precious opportunities to creating endless placement options and career progression thus broadening my educational scope and sharpening my practical skills.  Numerous studies demonstrate the benefits of professional networks, including increased employment and business prospects, deeper and wider knowledge, enhanced ability to innovate, quicker career advancement, and increased status and authority. Main Question Post

Good day everyone, my name is Angela, I am 39yrs old and I live with my husband and 2 children,  I currently am working as a nurse practitioner in the hospital setting, however I went through adult geriatric primary care and I would like to complete my acute care focus.

Walden’s vision, mission, goals and social change initiatives relate to my professional and academic goals by having up to date education that can be applied to what I will practice in the work force and profession to better advance my career in the acute care field as I want to expand and understanding with the use of critical thinking to provide better care for my patients and contribute to their health and social conditions.

Walden University’s outcomes relate to my professional and academic goals as I am  committed to life long learning, in my  current  position, with every patient i see and talk to, I usually take something from them that i can apply to someone else. Also being part of this program, it was not required of me to get this further education, I wanted to obtain to provide the best care I can to my diverse,  multicultural community.

I have found that networking as a hospitalist is important mostly with other specialties services, including Infectious Disease, pulmonology,  Cardiology, and critical care as it does create a clearer chain of communication when  being part of a  multidisciplinary team. It was also a good way to learn from each other and different points of view from other specialties.  Also, networking can also help provide further job opportunities and be able to  explore different that you may not have previously considered (Professional networking in nursing).

It is also recommended by ANA to join their state organization especially as a new grand to be able to learn your local,  up to date legislature for your community.   Also going to annual conferences meeting people from different communities to get different perspectives (Professional networking for Nurses 2017).

Participation in Discussions: The exchange of ideas among colleagues engaged in scholarly inquiry is a key aspect of learning and is a requisite activity in this course. You are expected to participate by posting a response to a prompt or question in the Discussion area. In addition, you are expected to respond to your fellow students’ postings. To count as participation, responses need to be thoughtful; that is, they must refer to the week’s readings, relevant issues in the news, information obtained from other sources, and/or ideas expressed in the postings of other class members. You may ask questions or offer further information or links about the subject. Please pay attention to grammar and spelling, as consistently poorly written posts will receive grade penalties. In grading the required Discussion postings, your Instructor will be using the Discussion Posting and Response Rubric, located in the Course Information area.

Your original post should start with: Main Question Post

Your response posts should start with: 1. Response and

  1. include Name of person to whom you are responding

Original Posts require 3 references

Both Response Posts require 2 references

There are 4 Discussions during this 11-week course: Modules 1, 3, 5 and 6.

Please use correct netiquette: always be respectful and courteous in all of your communications

Reply from Mattie Bah

My Name is Mattie Bah, and I live in Maryland. I migrated from Sierra Leone, West Africa about 30 years ago.  I Completed my nursing degrees her in the USA. My work experience ranges from working with trauma patients in a level 3 hospital, with patients ranging from medical/surgical to orthopedics, including MVC (motor vehicle crash), and stab/gunshot wound victims.  I also have had the privilege to work as an Infection Control Practitioner which allowed me to see from a different angle of patient care. In this job capacity I was able to learn more about infectious processes, which focused more on prevention and management of diseases, such as airborne diseases like tuberculosis.  After a few years in Infection Control I was able to start a home care business, with my family. Transitioning to home care as an employer has also widened my horizon in the healthcare arena, by assuming distinct roles within the healthcare market.  In my leisure time, I engage in a lot of fundraising activity for a medical charity organization in The Gambia, West Africa which I am a co-founder.  We provide medical treatment (screening /medication) to the underserved population free of charge, including surgical needs. Otherwise, I love travelling with my family.

I chose to enroll in Walden University for my Nurse Practitioner degree because it is an online accredited university, with a vision to provide up to date scholarly academic education that will enable me to function competitively in the ever-developing world of healthcare.  Walden’s mission aligns with mine as it will also provide me with the structure and knowledge for me to continue my academic growth in an environment that is equipped with a capable faculty. In this setting, I can learn and grow and be able to effect change globally.  Walden provides its programs through diverse process learning approaches, all resulting in outcomes of quality and integrity, which is the goal I am striving for.

Social change initiatives are important to me personally, as my advanced practice education will help me in treating patients, not only in the hospital setting, but also in the community. Mental health is a taboo topic in my part of the world, a place of cultural biases where you are expected to be strong and face problems as an everyday part of life that are considered a normal occurrence. My expertise in this area will help many who would otherwise go undetected in these medical camps, because of the education/knowledge and experience I will acquire at Walden and through the practicum field experience.

Networking is the link that creates opportunities for growth in other areas of interest. My transition to Infection Control was by networking with a fellow nurse who had just left bedside nursing. In speaking with her, I understood what the job entailed and when opportunity was presented in the department, I could apply for the job.  During my orientation, she continued to serve as a guide for me, in navigating my way through.

Networking can also be beneficial in interdisciplinary connections that improve patient care.  When the interdisciplinary team of nurses, PT, OT, for example work together, it improves patient outcomes because care is tailored around the patients’ needs.

Reply from Janelle L Hammock

My name is Janelle Hammock. I completed my Paramedic program in 2001 and worked in prehospital and emergency room settings before pursuing career paths outside healthcare. Those professions included Emergency Management, Disaster Response and Recovery, Social Services, and Director of Operations for an intensive therapeutic center serving autistic individuals and those with related disorders. In May 2023, I returned to school to complete an accelerated BSN and now work as a nurse in the Emergency Department of a Level 1 Trauma Center. These various careers enabled me to pursue my passion for elevating the voices of those who do not have the platform to be heard, serving underserved populations, caring for people who far too often remain unseen, and advocating for systemic and social change.

Walden University’s Mission expresses a commitment to developing scholar-practitioners capable of effecting social change which was a deciding factor in choosing this university to pursue my MSN-FNP degree (Walden University, n.d.-b). My lifelong pursuit of elevating disparity issues preventing access to services while advocating for change to promote more equitable representation of underserved populations illustrates my alignment with Walden University’s MSN learning outcome of equipping students to reduce health disparities through advocacy for specialized nursing care (Walden University, n.d.-a). Through my previous work in social services and disaster recovery, I have seen first-hand the socioeconomic inequities that impact an individual’s ability to meet basic human needs and am committed to being a change-maker in the communities I serve through the nursing profession.

I have always considered myself a lifelong learner and am excited to continue my education as a scholar-practitioner. I plan to put knowledge into action as I expand my leadership abilities, focus on mastering the skills and knowledge of advanced nursing practice, and effect change based on evidence-based practice. My belief that everyone is responsible for using their unique talents and gifts to build community aligns with Walden University’s social change commitment (Walden University, n.d.-c). It also makes networking an important aspect of professional development. We all bring unique perspectives and experiences. Connecting and collaborating with a diverse network of colleagues, mentors, and community members exposes us to worldviews that differ from our own and enhances our understanding of the populations we serve. These networks also allow us access to new practice opportunities, potential career paths, and collaborations essential to our personal and professional growth. I look forward to sharing my experiences with my Walden classmates and hope they are open to sharing their perspectives with me as we pursue our academic goals.

Reply from Corrina Richmond

Hello everyone,

My name is Corrina and I have been a nurse for 9 years. The first 8 years of my nursing career were in OB. I was a travel mother baby nurse for about 5 years, living in places such as Arizona, Hawaii, Las Vegas, California and a few local contracts in the Chicagoland area. I then transitioned to psych and have been doing that for about a year. I work at a psychiatric facility for pediatric and adolescents. I truly love what I do! I was always fascinated in psych and I’m happy to have the opportunity to help patients and their families. When I’m not working I travel as much as I can, try new restaurants and spend time with my puppy and other loved ones.

I knew I always wanted to advance in my career as a nurse practitioner. When I changed my specialty to psych, I didn’t see anything more fitting than a career as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. I wanted to start a program that aligned with the same goal as I had and Walden’s vision, mission, goals and social change initiatives fit that description. Walden’s mission, “transform diverse nursing professionals into champions of change who will improve health outcomes and advance health equity” is something that hit home with me. I am a black nurse and understand the importance of diversity and how everyone should have equal opportunity to healthcare. Becoming a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner will add to this mission. I also agreed with Walden’s vision, “prepare distinguished graduates to advance the greater good of global communities” (Walden University, 2020).  My goal is to help local communities.

Networking is essential when it comes to career development and growth. It is believed that over 80% of jobs are obtained by networking (Schmidt, n.d.). So the more you network the more likely you will be to find a job. This will be helpful as a new graduate. Another reason why networking is important is because it helps with career advancement. Taking this course and completing this programing means that we all want to advance in our careers. Collaborating with peers allows this to happen. I look forward to working with you all.

Main post

Hi everyone, this is Stella Ukakogu, a registered nurse who completed my course in December 2022. I am doing my Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) program at Walden University. The decision to enter the clinical specialty of mental health nursing must be inspired by a passion for caring for and supporting mentally ill patients.

Walden’s vision, mission, goals, and mission and change align with my career and academic objectives. Of particular interest to me, Walden’s mission to promote the betterment of society matches my desire to fight against the stigmatization of mental health issues and to advocate for people with mental disorders. Ideally, one can say that as a future PMHNP, I will not only provide valuable care needed by my patients but also raise awareness of the given issue and make sure that minorities will have an equal chance to receive the appropriate level of support they need (Walden University, n. d.).

The Walden MSN Program Outcomes and perspectives benefit my growth as an academician-scholar. These outcomes focus on using research findings in practice, following the code of ethics, and patient-centered care, which is vital for my PMHNP practice role. Such concepts will help me perform my duties in the future since the nature of mental health care requires balance and an understanding of several factors by the healthcare professionals, enabling me to make a difference to the patients and the society (Walden University, n. d. ).

In a working environment, building a relationship with colleagues and other healthcare professionals is important because it will foster teamwork by sharing knowledge to achieve a common goal such as patient care and safety and it will improve career growth. Through networking, I will be able to stay focused on achieving my desire for mental health care by sourcing more information from experienced mentors; those who have been in the system for a long time to guide me in my quest to become a competent and compassionate PMHNP.

As a nurse, I knew I wanted my practice to constantly challenge me and allow me to make a difference to each patient and family member I encountered. I started in the intensive care unit (ICU) at a Level I trauma center as a new graduate with an associate degree in nursing. I was overwhelmed with what I did not know and feared failure immediately. I met with nurse educators, mentors, and preceptors regularly and studied on my own time at home. Thankfully, with hard work, I did well in the ICU as a new nurse. As I completed four years of experience in the ICU, I decided I wanted to be a flight nurse on a helicopter. I appreciated the dedication, skillset, continuing education, and autonomy that the flight nurses had.

I continued to work in the ICU part-time but broadened my experience by taking a full-time position in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). After a few years of experience in the PICU and continuing my education in the adult ICU, I became a flight nurse. I served a fantastic 11-year journey in helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS). I completed my last mission in April of 2022. I now work as a nighttime hospital supervisor, which includes being a clinical resource for the nurses. I enjoy my current work but miss the autonomy, advanced skill set, and patient care I previously experienced in the HEMS industry. This guided me to pursue a degree at Walden University to obtain an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner degree through the RN to MSN bridge program.

After researching multiple universities, I could relate to Walden University’s vision and mission, which made me feel that this was the right place to further my education and broaden my knowledge to provide the best patient care possible. I value Walden’s flexibility and the resources available to students. The university prioritizes their success and creates a dedicated foundation for professional development. Walden’s program was also appealing as I could take classes online and engage in discussions with students from different backgrounds. This motivated my decision to return to school to connect with a diverse group of professionals, enhancing my personal growth and contributing to societal change, aligning with Walden’s vision to advance the greater global good (Walden University, n.d.b).

In addition, Walden aspires to cultivate graduates of high caliber equipped to make significant contributions to their chosen professions, thereby enhancing society. This aligns with the School of Nursing’s (SON) aim to produce top-tier nursing graduates prepared to undertake roles as caregivers, educators, and lifelong learners (Walden University, n.d.a). The MSN program at Walden resonates with my goals as it highlights the importance of continuous learning in the ever-evolving field of nursing and, professional networking. Walden understands the importance of professional networking in forming connections for career advancement, gaining knowledge resources, and finding professional support (Schmidt, n.d.).

I am incredibly excited about this journey.

My Goals and University Vision and Mission

Hi everyone, My name is Rupalben Patel. I have been a nurse since 2018, and I am currently working in acute rehabilitation, where I treat patients suffering from stroke, MS, Parkinson’s, spinal cord injury, and brain injury. I was urged to further my career therefore discovered Walden University through online resources and was intrigued by the flexibility it provides, which is critical for me as I work full time and have family responsibilities. I was also intrigued by Walden because of its mission, vision, and ambitions, which are quite like my own in nursing informatics.

Walden University’s School of Nursing (SON) mission statement emphasizes “a diverse community of career professionals transforming into scholar-practitioners to effect positive social change.” Given the diversity in the nursing profession, earning my degree will allow me to contribute to this varied community and drive constructive social change considering the rapidly evolving technological landscape in healthcare.

The university’s focus on positive social change through improved human and social conditions resonates with me. Technological advancements in healthcare, such as robotic equipment and electronic charting systems, have proven to be beneficial in fostering societal improvements. With my degree from Walden, I aim to be part of a team that enhances technology and drives social change.

MSN Learning Outcomes

One of the MSN learning outcomes from Walden University that aligns with my goals is the ability to leverage information technology to communicate effectively and create opportunities to enhance patient care remotely. Nurses are pivotal in using health technology to elevate patient care and communication. I plan to use my degree to help develop and refine systems that will enhance overall patient care and the healthcare field.

Reply from Ronacris Dadia Riego

Hello, my name is Ronacris Riego, and I am a nurse since 2018.  I have a background in case management, utilization management, and psychiatric unit nursing. Currently, I work as a travel nurse, and throughout my experience, I have realized that I like socializing with new people. It makes it easy for me to develop a close therapeutic relationship with my patients, therefore making it easy to understand some of their medical and mental conditions and thus create an appropriate treatment plan. I know that I have enrolled in this MSN program at Walden, and one of my biggest hopes is to acquire relevant skills and experience appropriate for improving health outcomes.

All students enrolling in any program in this institution must understand the organization’s Mission and vision as a guide for better results and academic achievement. The Walden University mission states that the organization serves the purpose of roving a diverse population of career professionals; the professionals have the necessary skills for transforming themselves into scholarly practitioners crucial for impacting social change. Therefore, my primary goal during my studies is to acquire all the essential skills and prepare myself with all the knowledge needed to spearhead social change. Social change. Nursing is a career that entails interaction with various people and communities (Firestone et al., 2021). Each community has diverse cultural implications that negatively or negatively impact the consumption of healthcare services. As a healthcare provider and a scholarly practitioner, I am prepared for human interaction changes necessary for transforming culture over a while.

This learning institution has a vision statement illustrating the goals of studies. The institution looks forward to rendering broad educational opportunities necessary for learners; as a healthcare popover, there is a need to have a contextual education program that shapes the learner to various healthcare environments. The availability of social change provides quality healthcare providers that can adapt to any cultural environment (Firestone et al., 2021). Diversification mandates healthcare providers to have the necessary skills for managing multicultural patients. As an MSN student, therefore, I have the mandate of ensuring I master the diverse learning process and programs and also develop the highest levels of integrity.

The Walden University programs directly relate to my professional and academic goals. For instance, the goal is to have a diverse-sensitive healthcare provider. Therefore, having skills and knowledge that are crucial and diverse shapes the person I want to be. After graduating from nursing school, I will have all it takes to be a scholarly practitioner. The facility is committed to rendering education and producing graduates who are scholarly practitioners and, therefore, agents of social change in the community. Another crucial aspect is that the facility admits students from all walks of life. I will likely make the acquaintances necessary for networking during my stay at the institution. Networking is crucial because it makes it easy to access lucrative job opportunities (Pianse & Belfiore, 2021). Another essential element of networking is that it provides accessibility to career advice and professional connections.

Reply from Bethany Hakel

Main Question Post

My name is Bethany Hakel and I have been a nurse for 10 years; prior to going back to school I worked with individuals with disabilities in their homes.  The first three years as a nurse I worked in a Med-Surg unit at a community hospital and the past 7 years I have worked in hospice.  I started as a RN Case Manager for home hospice patients and currently round on our inpatient unit as well as speak with inpatient hospice referrals.

Walden’s vision, mission, goals, and social change initiatives align with my goals as a nurse and as a person in general.  Walden’s vision of judging knowledge by its ability to improve the greater global good is ambitious and important in society (Walden, n.d.)  Learning only to obtain knowledge for oneself without actions to better the world around us seems in the end unvaluable. The development of ideas along with intentional actions to promote every person’s worth and improve their well-being in turn improves society in general (Walden, n.d.).  As healthcare providers we are called to care for our patients and help them take action to improve their lives, and in turn improve society in general.

The Walden College of Nursing MSN program outcomes further specify Walden’s vision, mission, goals, and social change initiatives to apply directly to healthcare providers (Walden, n.d.).  Using knowledge gained through the MSN program we as scholar-practitioners can then translate the knowledge into action to improve our patients’ health, reduce disparities in access to healthcare, and in turn improve society.

As Schmidt (n.d.) states, many, including myself, have thought of networking as done only by salespeople or those attempting to persuade customers into buying a certain product or service.  However, Schmidt’s (n.d.) descriptions of social and professional networks have shown me that we all network to some extent in our lives.  It is no coincidence that many of my Facebook friends are also nurses!  Professional networking is important when seeking a new job, gaining new information in one’s specialty, and having reliable and professional references when applying for a new job (Schmidt, n.d.).  Networking can help me achieve my professional goal of becoming a hospice nurse practitioner as those jobs are few and far between in my area.

Hello everyone,

My name is Nazanin Kalhor, and I am thrilled to be here with you as we continue our studies in Walden University’s Master of Science at Nursing (MSN) program. Nursing is my professional background. After earning my AA degree in 2017, I immediately began working in home health and hospice, performing both fieldwork and administrative duties with agencies working with CMS. I returned to school to earn my BSN, which I received in 2023. My motivation is to improve patient care outcomes and advance the nursing profession through evidence-based practice and ongoing education. I am determined to increase my clinical experience and education so that I can become a competent and caring nurse practitioner.

Walden University’s vision, mission, and commitment to social change are entirely consistent with my academic and professional goals. My goal is to provide excellent patient care while simultaneously advocating for social justice and health fairness, which aligns with Walden University’s objective of empowering students to make a difference in their professions and communities (n.d.-a). My commitment to understanding and meeting the unique needs of various patient populations is consistent with the goal of creating a diverse and inclusive learning environment. This is consistent with my goal of being an evidence-based nurse practitioner who is culturally competent and improves patient outcomes (Walden University, n.d.–b).

Furthermore, Walden’s goals of encouraging lifelong learning and critical thinking are vital for my development as a scholar-practitioner. I plan to use what I’ve learned in this degree to conduct research and execute evidence-based treatments that will result in positive change in healthcare settings. Walden’s emphasis on social change activities inspires me to participate in community health projects and advocate efforts to reduce healthcare inequities (Walden University, n.d.-c).

My academic and professional objectives are perfectly aligned with Walden University’s MSN program outcomes. The results highlight how important it is for me to build advanced nursing competencies, leadership abilities, and a dedication to evidence-based practice because these are all essential for my future as a nurse practitioner. My goal is to gain proficiency in these areas so that I can make educated clinical decisions, lead healthcare teams, and provide exceptional patient care. The program’s emphasis on ethical practice and legal challenges in the healthcare industry will help me evolve into a well-rounded scholar-practitioner with the highest levels of professional integrity.

Networking is an essential component of both professional and academic success. Building a strong network of colleagues, mentors, and industry professionals may offer support, direction, and opportunities for collaboration. Through networking, I aim to meet experienced experts who can provide insights and assistance, help me solve difficulties, and open doors to new prospects in research and practice. Participating in a community of like-minded people would not only improve my learning experience but will also allow me to give back to the nursing profession by sharing my knowledge, experiences, and best practices. I am delighted to learn from and grow with every one of you as we embark on this academic journey!

Reply from Elizabeth Rachel Fofanah

Hi everyone, my name is Elizabeth Fofanah, and I have worked as a nurse for 8 going on to 9 years. I have had experience in a range of settings, such as the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Psychiatric Units, Neurology Units, and Cardiac Progressive Care Units (PCU/Tele). Currently, I work as a Cardiac PCU nurse at Abrazo Central Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona.

I have worked as a nurse for slightly more than 8 years, and I’m sincerely thoroughly enjoying it so far. Initially, I worked as a nursing assistant at a facility that provided specialized care for patients with medical needs. It provided me with the opportunity to meet and collaborate with different nurses from all walks of life. Our team consisted of individuals from all backgrounds who possess a strong
dedication to providing compassionate care and support to elderly individuals.

Additionally, it provided me with the opportunity to learn from the residents how to effectively manage their chronic conditions. We provided medical assistance for acute illnesses, offered palliative care, and served as a support system for individuals who
considered us their family. I have developed a strong passion for nursing. My dedication lies in helping and affection to the residents, their families, and the staff members under my supervision. I have always harbored a desire to return to school, but I have been
apprehensive owing to my family responsibilities, particularly with young children, and I have contemplated the matter.

I thought that I would be unable to simultaneously engage in full-time employment and academic studies, but I have ultimately decided to return. I am quite fortunate, as I have a solid support system. One of my motivations for wanting to pursue additional
education is to acquire advanced knowledge and skills and be able to contribute meaningfully to society.

The provided passage is a segment from Walden University’s mission statement. It asserts that the university aims to offer an array of professionals the chance to develop themselves as practicing scholars, enabling them to bring about beneficial societal
transformations. The College of Nursing aims to “establish routes to success for nurses, students, and healthcare stakeholders with the goal to attain greatness and enhance global health outcomes.”

These declarations should provide a framework for nurses’ professional and academic goals, urging them to pursue significant advancements in healthcare, prioritize excellent patient care and outcomes, and aspire to become outstanding scholar-practices.

A nurse’s occupational and educational goals, whether established independently or together, should align with the organization’s stated mission and vision. The organization’s overarching goals should guide the assessment of registered nurses’ academic and professional aspirations, and they should seek assistance to further their own objectives. Networking is a crucial component of achieving success in both your career and academic endeavors. Nurses can utilize this tool to establish connections with both groups and individuals that can provide them with assistance and support in achieving their objectives. When endeavoring to establish a network, it is advisable to establish connections with others both in person and through internet platforms. This will enable you to derive inspiration and receive support from a broader spectrum of individuals.

Nursing must incorporate both the professional and academic aspects of the discipline to gain recognition as a genuine profession. To foster the growth of skilled and proficient nurses, it is imperative to perceive nursing education and practice as an amalgamation of the two elements, as this is crucial for the development of competent and capable nurses. Academic research and development require proficiency in scholarly writing and research concepts, whereas professional growth requires knowledge of evidence-based practice and practical experience in implementing this approach. Nurses must possess expertise in both professional and academic domains to enhance their career prospects.

Reply from Nche Mou Bayong

Hello everyone, my name is Nche Mou Bayong, and I am currently the Program Director at an Intensive Residential Treatment Services (IRTS) facility in Bloomington, MN. My journey in the nursing field spans over eight years, with a significant part of my experience gained during my service in the Navy. This background has provided me with a unique perspective on the importance of mental health care, particularly for veterans and underserved populations. My current role allows me to directly impact individuals struggling with mental health challenges, which has further motivated my decision to specialize in psychiatry nursing. I believe that pursuing this specialization will enable me to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to provide more comprehensive care to those in need, particularly in the mental health sector, where there is a growing demand for qualified professionals who can address complex psychiatric conditions.

Walden University’s mission and vision resonate deeply with my professional aspirations. The university’s commitment to social change and its focus on transforming students into scholar-practitioners align perfectly with my goal of making a meaningful impact in psychiatric nursing. Walden’s emphasis on evidence-based practice and ethical decision-making is crucial to my development as a nurse leader who provides high-quality care and advocates for systemic changes in mental health care delivery. As I work towards my MSN, I am confident that the knowledge and skills I gain will empower me to contribute to the advancement of psychiatric nursing within my organization and the broader healthcare community. My ultimate goal is to leverage my education and experience to drive positive changes that improve patient outcomes and enhance the quality of mental health services.

As I progress through the MSN program at Walden University, I am particularly drawn to the program outcomes that emphasize clinical judgment, ethical decision-making, and interprofessional collaboration. Such aspects are essential to my development as a psychiatric nurse practitioner. In mental health care, thinking critically to arrive at sound clinical decisions within an ethical framework is paramount since patients’ circumstances may present multiple factors. However, it is essential to pay attention to the collaboration between healthcare professionals as, in many cases, mental health treatment involves professionals from several specialist areas. This is an aspect I would like to pursue to polish my skills as I seek a career path in practice where I will likely be part of a healthcare team and ensure that the patients come first. This fits into my overall career goals of increasing patient satisfaction and promoting better mental health service delivery within organizations and communities.

Networking is another critical component of my professional and academic journey. It will be beneficial to cultivate rapport with friendly faculty members, peers, and especially experts in the psychiatric nursing field as I advance my learning and career (Walker, 2018). In essence, networking results in acquiring information, guidance, and backing that is instrumental in the success of the chosen specialization. Membership with professional bodies like the APNA will create an avenue through which I will build my practice by gaining the latest information on development in the nursing profession and building relationships with people with a similar passion I have for the nursing specialty of psychiatric mental health nursing (Nurse.org, 2024). Such relationships will assist me in improving my learning outcomes, allowing me to engage in collaboration and research and even get promotions. I believe that an established professional network is essential to reaching my goals and developing as a psychiatric nurse.

Walden University’s social change initiatives inspire me as I pursue my goals in psychiatric nursing. The focus on contributing to positive social change encourages me to shift away from patient-focused thinking regarding what I can do for society and, especially, the less fortunate communities or those who have been marginalized because of mental problems. My goal is to utilize the gained knowledge and skills when working at Walden to advance the policies connected with the increased availability of mental health services, lack of prejudice to people suffering from mental disorders, and the implementation of the person-centered approach. This resonates with my goals of becoming a leader in the field of psychiatric nursing to be able to change not only the specific procedures in dealing with patients who suffer from mental disorders but also to shape the practices that would enhance societies’ tolerance towards mental health issues. From my experience at Walden, I will acquire those tools that will create the change needed to achieve sustainable success.

Looking forward, I understand that becoming a successful psychiatric nurse practitioner requires continuous learning and professional development. Networking will also be beneficial in this process as it allows for gathering more people who are similarly passionate about improving mental health care. Notably, it will enrich the practice by developing connections with other professionals, such as clinicians, researchers, or policymakers, in various capacities. Additionally, forming solid relationships with my peers at Walden will create an invaluable support system during challenging times. I see great potential for my further personal and career development, and I am quite confident that through networking, learning, and commitment to social issues, I will be able to pursue my academic and professional goals and contribute to the field of psychiatric nursing.

My name is Stella Chinelo.  I want to be called Chinelo. I have been a nurse for two years. I have worked in acute care and pediatrics.   I am currently working in a mental health hospital. I studied Dental therapy in Nigeria before moving to the United States.  I decided to go back to school to study nursing because I like to care for the sick.   I graduated with an Associate degree in nursing in 2021. I went back to school to get my bachelor’s degree in nursing, I graduated in December 2022. My first job was in the emergency department.   It allowed me to meet and work with staff members from different walks of life, who have the passion to care. It is also   Walden University’s vision of its graduates will be able to make changes and contribute to the greater good of the community that one may serve, which aligns with my personal goal (Walden University, 2021). Walden displays the goal to provide well-educated practitioners that encourage well diverse group to utilize all the knowledge and skills they have learned from their perspective program and apply to bring about social change through innovative, principal scholar-practitioners (Walden University, 2021). Walden University’s vision, mission, and goals will help me achieve my personal and professional goals and be able to make a contribution, change, and be a part of the greater good in the mental health facility.  upon completion of the program and certification as a mental health nurse practitioner. There are a lot of initiatives. I would like to play a more active role in the community that I serve, preventing unnecessary rehospitalization for example, I see not only the financial and emotional impact it has on the patients, their families, and the community, but also the potential penalties for the hospitals to readmit within 30 days for certain target conditions (Gupta & Fonarow, 2018). Because of this, I have the vision and goal of working as a mental health nurse practitioner in a mental health facility. I believe that Walden University will be able to prepare me as far as having the knowledge, critical thinking, and clinical skills once I finish the mental health nurse practitioner program. I will be able to provide the necessary care that is based on the most up-to-date evidence-based research to prevent the unnecessary rehospitalization of patients. (Walden, 2021).

Nurses can develop a diverse network, access unique perspectives and insights, get advice, and share experiences and accomplishments. Online networking can also help nurses gain visibility in the field, especially when seeking a new role

Main Question Post

Hi to all, I am Bernadette Sotelo, a certified oncology nurse who has worked as an oncology nurse in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait before moving to the US 2 years ago.  When I first arrived, I was astounded by the possibilities that were made available to me, and I am excited to seize the opportunity to further my education on attaining my MSN.  However, because of the hectic schedules that nurses face on a daily basis, I started looking for an online school since I still wanted to pursue my goal of improving myself better. Luckily, my cousin, who is currently enrolled in her second quarter at Walden University, strongly recommended this institution. Something that will work with my hectic schedule is vitally required.

My goal and Walden’s are similar in that we want to equip graduates with the most recent knowledge to significantly alter society for the benefit of all people on the planet. I want to improve my career and clinical skills so that I may acquire the knowledge and skills needed to manage the demanding healthcare needs of the people I work with.  Developing these skills will enable them to perform at a higher level.  I want to advance my professional career to better serve the diverse community I work with. Walden University provides modern, student-centered courses that prioritize critical thinking, and we will work together to make this happen.

As we constantly encounter clinical issues in our work that put our nursing skills to the test, I think that lifelong learning and teamwork are important. The results and perspectives of Walden’s MSN program are relevant to my professional and academic objectives, as acquiring a master’s degree will enhance my clinical abilities through further training and certification, enabling me to deliver high-quality patient care. The highly skilled instructors at Walden and the school’s support network are essential to my career as a nurse practitioner.

Schmidt (n.d.) mentioned in his blog, “Professional Networking is the best way for nurses to find jobs.” I got every job I have, including this online course, through networking in all its forms. Its significance cannot be overstated. In addition, networking with colleagues and building a professional network through memberships in organizations will supply me with a network of support, possibilities for career progression, and the opportunity to share information and best practices with colleagues. Professionally and academically, networking encourages collaboration between students and other healthcare professionals, which improves projects, patient outcomes, and methods for solving issues.

Main question post

Hi, my name is Lovepreet kaur. I completed my BSN in 2018 in India. I got my california RN license in February 2023. Currently i am working as a home health nurse.

I am pleased to join you in this academic endeavor as I earn my Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with an emphasis in Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP). This is why the vision, mission, and goals of Walden University correlate with my personal and professional priorities, and the institution’s dedication to social innovation has been a significant determinant of my decision to join the university (Walden University, n.d.-c). I find Walden’s vision of establishing a learning community that prepares graduates to introduce societal changes stimulating; as a nurse, I have a passion for positively impacting patients and the healthcare system (Walden Universityn.d.-c). The mission of turning students into scholar-practitioner individuals who can make positive social change precisely complements my objective of enhancing healthcare results within my working community, especially as an FNP, through preventative care and patient education (Walden University, n.d.-c).

Walden outlines goals for an institution that offers innovative, learner-centered education and enhances critical thinking and excellence as a professional, helping shape the learner into a more reflective practitioner (Walden Universityn.d.-b). I am motivated to increase my knowledge base and use this information to solve real-life problems so that I am well-equipped to handle the future challenges of this field of health care. Of all the stated aims and objectives, the theme of positive social change is most significant to me because it calls for bringing about positive change in society. I would like to use the skills and strategies learned from Walden to enhance the worth and value of persons and communities.

Networking is the other domain that has been accorded a lot of importance as I continue my academic and professional development at Walden. Establishing networking with students, professors, and members of the working environment will give me a variety of viewpoints, encouragement, and cooperation (Saatchi et al., 2023). Such relationships will be beneficial when pursuing my goals and objectives of being a good FNP while enhancing the availability and quality of health services. I am eager to learn from each of you and share more about myself throughout this program.

Hi, I am Saramma Ipe. I have been an RN for 35 years. I graduated with an MSN in 2015, took a break from my continuous education, and started a Post-Master’s Adult Primary Geriatric Certification program. For the last 17 years, I have been in a critical care unit, seeing people in their last days with their anxiety and suffering. This experience has made me think and work with senior citizens and give them support and guidance for the rest of their lives with emotional resilience. This thought inspired me to continue my nursing education for the NP certification

Walden’s vision, mission, goals, and social change initiatives create a learning community where knowledge is applied to solve critical challenges, advancing the profession for greater change. Walden University’s mission is help graduates to increase their knowledge, skills, and abilities to function properly to a positive social change in their workplace and the community. This aligns with my professional and academic goals of becoming a scholar-practitioner who not only excels in the nursing field but also contributes to meaningful social change in the community too. Walden University has several social initiatives designed to empower students to make a positive impact on society. Social change projects, workshops, webinars, and networking opportunities to help individuals develop their social change ideas(Academics at Walden University (n.d.).

Walden’s MSN programs are designed to prepare graduates to synthesize organizational and systems leadership for cost-effective nursing practice, contribute to high-quality healthcare delivery, advance the nursing profession, and promote social change. MSN and graduate studies can significantly help to become a scholar-practitioner by providing a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical experience. By combining rigorous academic training with practical experience, graduate studies equip me with the tools needed to excel as a scholar-practitioner, making meaningful contributions to both academia and the professional community. The comprehensive approach to nursing education supports the academic goal of gaining a holistic understanding of healthcare, enabling one to become a well-rounded scholar-practitioner (Zaccagnini et al.,  2020).

Networking plays an important role in achieving professional and academic success. It helps build relationships with other professionals, providing opportunities for mentorship, collaboration, and career advancement. Academically, networks help gain more contacts and knowledge, giving a competitive advantage when choosing a graduate program. Networking helps us achieve our goals by finding mentors and advisors. During the professional journey, experienced mentors and advisors can give valuable advice, helping us establish ourselves as leaders in the field (Goolsby & Knestrick 2017).

Main Question Post

Hello everyone,

My name is Abumchukwu Onujiogu. I prefer people to call me (AB). I worked full-time in a skilled nursing facility. My career objective with Walden University is to pursue a career as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) specializing in mental health care, with a strong focus on health promotion and disease prevention. I aim to contribute to the well-being of my patients by utilizing evidence-based practices and fostering a compassionate and holistic approach to care.

Walden University’s vision, mission, and goals deeply resonate with me. The school’s commitment to social change and its focus on critical thinking and evidence-based practices align perfectly with my academic and professional goals (Walden University, n.d.). This alignment gives me confidence that the cutting-edge instruction I will receive at Walden will further my career in mental health care and advance my practice. The university’s emphasis on applying learning to solve critical societal challenges directly supports my goal of becoming an APRN equipped to address patients’ mental health needs. The focus on transforming students into scholar-practitioners who effect positive social change resonates with my desire to use critical thinking and evidence-based practices in my career.

Walden University’s emphasis on providing multi-contextual and innovative educational opportunities is instrumental in supporting my goal of extending my knowledge in mental health care. The university’s learner-centered education approach allows me to tailor my studies to my specific interests, such as disease prevention and chronic depression management in elderly patients. Professional networking can easily be seen as manufactured and motivated by hidden agendas, whereas social networking is seen as genuine and whole (Schmidt, 2017).  The university’s commitment to positive social change aligns with my professional goal of improving patient outcomes through enhanced treatment. Walden’s social change initiatives support my holistic approach to care by focusing on the worth and dignity of individuals and communities.

Networking is not just essential but invaluable in professional development. It opens up countless and precious opportunities (Wofford, 2018). I understand the significant role collaboration with faculty, fellow students, and professional teams can play in enhancing my learning and professional development. I am eager to leverage the opportunities for networking within the Walden community and beyond, as they can provide valuable connections and resources to help me achieve my goals. My potential contribution to my professional development is highly valued and appreciated. Integrating these aspects into my academic success and professional development plan has created a clear pathway toward becoming a skilled and compassionate APRN. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to pursue my career objectives at Walden University, and I look forward to the journey ahead with the school’s support and guidance.

I chose Walden University because their vision and goals align with my own. I work in a very unique hospital, as it serves a diverse group of patients compared to other community hospitals in my area. I recognize that the world we live in is ever-changing and that we, as practitioners, need to keep up with those changes and be accepting of them so that we can better serve our communities. Walden’s vision and mission statements make it clear that they understand the critical societal challenges and want to take part in it. My goal after obtaining my MSN and sitting for my boards is to continue working in the Emergency Department but as an advanced practice nurse.

Walden’s MSN Learning Outcomes are the same goals I wish to achieve. I want to make a change in the world of Nursing, I want to leave behind a footprint. Outcome four is one that I am passionate about. I have noticed that not only nurses but also physicians, continue to speak to patients using verbal or written discharge instructions that patients cannot fully understand, even though as practitioners, we know that this increases the risk for readmission and emergency room visits (Shahid et al., 2022). This outcome goes hand in hand with Outcome 1. I want to increase health literacy with my patients to help drive down unnecessary healthcare costs.

I found Walden University after networking with Nurse Practitioners that I know when I decided to move forward with my academic goals. Professional networking is a key factor in elevating career goals. Finding ideal opportunities to meet potential contacts and joining professional organizations in your specialty is a great way to begin networking (Barbier, 2016). Networking in social settings is not the only option to expand your professional contacts though. Baumann & Utz (2023) state “despite the differences between offline and online networking, research has identified similar benefit” (p. 2). During this week’s required readings, I particularly enjoyed the article “10 Networking Tips for Nurses Who Hate Networking”. As a mom with three young children, it was educational in ways to network from home which included using social media and joining Facebook groups. I believe in this day and age, everyone has used networking, rather they realized it or not. The key to success is pinpointing who you need to make connections with to reach your goals.

Main Question Post

I am Ronald Lim, and I have worked as a community health nurse for over ten years. I am married to a nurse, and we have a daughter of working age. I mainly serve the older population and people with disabilities, so I wanted to pursue a master’s in AGNP primary care. Thus, my search for an NP school began. Fortunately, a colleague who also enrolled at Walden University highly recommended this school. Upon looking at Walden’s website, I noticed that it suits the flexibility I need to pursue higher education simultaneously.

Walden’s vision of providing graduates with modern education to effect critical societal changes for the greater global good aligns with my vision. I aspire to advance my career and clinical skills to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to address the complex healthcare needs of the population I serve. Gaining these skills will serve them in another higher role. Walden’s mission and goals also resonate with me. I want to advance a professional career to help the diverse community I serve. Over the years of patient interactions, there have been apparent gaps in their healthcare needs. I aspire to contribute to solving these gaps in health care by applying the education and critical thinking skills I will be getting. Walden University will partner in this endeavor as it provides innovative, learner-centered educational programs that use critical thinking skills.

I believe in lifelong learning and collaboration as we continually meet clinical challenges in our jobs that test our existing nursing knowledge. Walden’s MSN outcomes and perspectives relate to my professional and academic goals, as obtaining a master’s degree will significantly improve my clinical skills through additional training and certification to provide quality patient care. Walden’s highly qualified faculty and support system of the school is crucial to my becoming a nurse practitioner.

I got my current job through networking, specifically by referral. I cannot emphasize its importance. As Schmidt (n.d.) mentioned in his blog, “Professional Networking is the best way for nurses to find jobs.” Moreover, developing social and professional relationships and joining professional organizations will help me gain a support system, knowledge sharing, best practices with peers, career advancement, and job opportunities. Academically and professionally, networking fosters collaboration with fellow students and other healthcare providers, leading to better projects, patient outcomes, and solutions to problems.
