Post a description of the national healthcare issue/stressor you selected for analysis.
The national healthcare issue I selected to analyze is work-related stress in healthcare workers. This stress affects healthcare workers’ physical and mental well-being and interferes with the quality of care provided to patients. Healthcare workers often encounter significant stressors that lead to burnout and job dissatisfaction (Bangani et al., 2021).
Explain how the healthcare issue/stressor may impact your work setting.
Work-related stress impacts my work setting regarding delivering adequate and efficient nursing care when treating patients. I often hear amongst my colleague the feeling of burnout and inability to take vacation due to nursing staff shortage and emotional exhaustion, which may affect their ability to provide high-quality care. Sometimes, some of my co-workers can be impaired with decision-making interventions and not focus on attention to detail because of being overworked and fatigued. This can compromise patient safety and well-being, resulting in increased medical errors, longer patient recovery times, and potentially adverse health outcomes due to delay or oversight in care (Greco et al., 2022). Additionally, we have many calls off because of the overwhelming exhaustion that my co-workers may experience from an overwhelming workload they experienced during their previous shifts; this can result in staff shortage, causing more stress and pressure on my colleague’s workload. Which social determinant(s) most affects this health issue?
Socioeconomic status is the social determinant affecting work-related stress in nursing healthcare staff (Senanayake et al., 2019). Nursing staff with lower social and socioeconomic status experience financial insecurity and have access to fewer resources, leading to higher stress and anxiety both at work and in their personal lives. In the workplace, these individuals may feel a loss of control over their jobs, leading to feelings of being overworked, having fewer benefits, and receiving less support from management (Senanayake et al., 2019). This emotional and physical toll on their work ethics creates a stressful work environment, making it more challenging to manage patient workload. This stress also significantly impacts the job performance of nursing staff, as well as their mental and physical health and overall well-being.

Describe how your health system work setting has responded to the healthcare issue/stressor, including a description of what changes may have been implemented. Be specific and provide examples.
My healthcare facility has implemented different strategies in my work setting to reduce the workload stress amongst nursing staff. For example, to help reduce the call-offs, my health system has introduced flexible scheduling that allows for better work-life balance and the introduction of new nursing staff positions. These changes help ensure that nursing staff reduce the pressure to meet high demands and improve the quality of care they can provide. There are also serenity rooms where nursing staff can take breaks and engage in mindfulness and stress-reduction relaxation time. My facility has implemented these steps in my work setting to address work-related stress and improve staff retention and patient care outcomes.
