Week 12 discussion 700

  1. In outline form, describe the processes to follow to appropriately select a model to guide a change in practice.

Model selection refers to the process of choosing between different available models. A four-step process has been identified for selecting the appropriate change model to guide a change practice.

  • Overreaching change objective
    • Such as improving nurses’ performance, improving patient care outcomes, and reducing incidences of hospital acquired infection.
  • Targeted stakeholders
    • The models are focused on different stakeholders. Having a clear awareness of the target stakeholders facilitates the decision about the model’s level of detail.
  • Differences between the available models
    • Different models have distinct purposes
  • Discipline
    • Change models are derived from other disciplines (such as psychology and sociology) and it is important to understand the original intention for developing these models. Nursing Practice change Model selection essay.
  • Available resources
    • Some models are costly to use and there is a need to ensure that the required resources are available
  • Face validity
    • Has the model been used in a similar documented change case?
  • Does the model look at change aspects that are relevant to the case? (Cherry & Jacobs, 2013).
  1. Discuss at least 2 specific possible consequences of selecting the wrong model.

Although change models have limits and uncertainties, selecting the wrong change model has consequences. Firstly, it causes the change manager to lose credibility and the capacity to influence others. This would cause the audience to be more resistant to the change as they would perceive that all the information presented for the change is erroneous. Secondly, using the wrong model ensures that the change does not take a fixed position so that there are opportunities for improvement as new information is collected and a better of the case is acquired. It allows the change manager to take a less literal view of the change and look at alternative views (Feldman, 2012). Nursing Practice change Model selection essay.
