TANIC Self-Assessment
TANIC Self-Assessment
Address the discussion questions below by using your self-appraisal proficiency/competency skill ratings identified on the TANIC Self-Assessment.
- Application of Course Knowledge: Answer all questions/criteria with explanations and detail.
-
- Discuss how your perceived proficiency level in informatics compared to your TANIC Self-Assessment responses.
- Describe two competencies identified as strengths.
- Describe two competencies identified as growth opportunities.
- Describe at least two strategies to enhance your competencies.
- Identify resources to support your selected strategies.
Comparing Perceived Proficiency with TANIC Self-Assessment Results
Initially, I viewed my informatics skills as generally proficient, particularly in areas like navigating electronic health records (EHRs) and managing patient data securely. However, the TANIC self-assessment highlighted areas where I am competent but could further develop my skills, especially in advanced data interpretation and the integration of clinical decision support systems (Kinnunen et al., 2023). This reflection on my perceived proficiency versus the TANIC results clarified the need for targeted growth in higher-level informatics tasks, showing where additional knowledge and practice could enhance my effectiveness in leveraging technology for patient care TANIC Self-Assessment.
Strength Competencies
Two of my competencies identified as strengths through the TANIC assessment are basic computer literacy and data security knowledge. Basic computer literacy, including software navigation and technical troubleshooting, is a strong point due to frequent use in my daily tasks. Additionally, data security skills are a strength, as I consistently follow best practices to protect patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA guidelines. These skills enable me to maintain efficiency and security in my documentation and digital communication practices, supporting safe and reliable care.

Growth Opportunities
Two competencies identified for improvement include data-driven decision-making and advanced health information technology (HIT) skills. Although I am competent in basic data interpretation, using data analytics for clinical decision-making is an area for growth (Almarwani, 2024). Additionally, while I understand EHR basics, I could benefit from more advanced knowledge of HIT tools, such as clinical decision support systems and interoperability features, to enhance my workflow and patient care. Focusing on these competencies will strengthen my ability to make informed decisions based on comprehensive data insights.
Strategies to Enhance Competencies
I will engage in structured learning and apply skills in practical settings to improve my competencies and abilities in applying informatics skills. Enrolling in advanced informatics courses focused on data-driven decision-making and HIT systems will build my foundational knowledge (Almarwani, 2024). Additionally, I plan to participate in simulation exercises and hands-on practice with case studies, allowing me to apply new skills directly in realistic clinical scenarios. These strategies will enable me to integrate informatics tools more effectively into my practice TANIC Self-Assessment.
Resources to Support Strategies
Key resources to support these strategies include membership in the American Nursing Informatics Association (ANIA) for access to webinars, networking opportunities, and up-to-date informatics research. Furthermore, online platforms like Coursera and edX offer flexible, competency-specific courses in health informatics and data security. These resources will provide both the theoretical knowledge and practical applications needed to support my competency development in informatics.
