How to Write Top Nursing Papers

To write top-quality nursing papers, you must master the academic writing process. It’s a technical process full of rules and conventions. It’s unlikely anyone you’ll grasp all the rules at once. You must practice the process consistently until you “get it.” This page attempts to explain a few things you must know if you want to see higher grades and an improving GPA. Let’s get started.

Nursing Writing is Technical Writing

The kind of writing that happens in most nursing programs is technical writing. Technical writing is more challenging to handle than regular academic writing.

Technical writing involves producing documentation that attempts to explain the treatment, design, and functions of a product or service. The product or service might be under use currently, or it could be under development. Such writing aims to help users and consumers to gain a better understanding of those products and services.

When you’re preparing a care plan, you’re essentially doing technical writing. Also, when developing a practice-based paper, that’s technical writing. When engineering, biology, chemistry, medicine, finance, or nursing students write an assignment, it’s most likely technical writing.

Technical writing is challenging. Completing top nursing papers is going to be a lot tougher than you might expect. You might even need a little nursing essay writing help.

Technical Writers Know their Subjects Well

A general writer is rarely the best person for when you want help with a technical subject such as nursing. You can’t write well if you’re not extensively familiar with discipline-specific language and terminology.

It’s hard to complete a nursing paper on oncology if you’re not an expert in that area. Technical writing is often more challenging to read than “normal” writing. That’s because it’s difficult to handle.

Writing technical documents, assignments, and papers will always require a lot more expertise, dedication, and skill than other types of writing. It’s not something you’ll become perfect at without much practice.

Academic Writing Talks Less but Says More

Formal English communicates clearly and in the most straightforward way. When John Grisham is composing his next novel, he’s not doing formal writing. A novelist often attempts to use “beautiful” and dramatic words and expressions to describe people, places, scenes, and objects. They hope to paint the clearest picture possible in the minds of their readers.

A novelist might say “He slumped down into the coach and went to the land of nod.” An academic writer will say “He lay on the couch and slept.” The first sentence features an idiom. That’s why it’s 12 words long. The second sentence is seven words long and uses straightforward language. The first sentence is like the kind of sentences creative writers love.

The second sentence is an example of the sort of writing favored by most academic writers. That isn’t saying academic writing excludes creativity. It doesn’t mean informal writing looks for longer words and sentences where shorter ones would suffice. Nor does it mean that academic writing never uses beautiful, descriptive words to paint vivid pictures in people’s minds.

Sure, you can use idioms in academic writing. However, you should do that sparingly. The central idea that guides all academic writing is “talk less; say more.” That brings us to a critical point — substance.

Top Nursing Papers Primarily Focus on Substance

People who think writing is easy are either terrible writers or geniuses. The best writers know there’s no good writing without deep thinking. Such writers never attempt to write anything until they have something important to say. Their message “ferments” in their minds first before they ever start typing the first character.

Substance is the real value delivered by a piece of writing. It’s the significance of your paper. Substance is the answer readers get from their brains when they ask themselves “what’s this paper about?” “What’s its essence?”

You likely have heard someone say “it’s a thick volume that says nothing!” What do they mean? They mean that the writing says so much but conveys little meaning. During the research and brainstorming phase of the writing process, a writer tries to find a new angle or perspective.

They seek new insights that other researchers have not discussed in their work. They strive to say the known in new ways and the unknown in old ways. A person who doesn’t thoroughly know their subject or topic can’t produce work that delivers real substance.

Top Nursing Papers Feature an Appealing Structure

Structure is a critical element of academic writing. It has to do with how a nursing student organizes their ideas, arguments, and paragraphs or sections. A good writer has mastered the art of arranging their content in a way that appeals most to the eyes and logic of readers.

Nursing papers often follow a different structure than papers in most other programs. That’s because nursing is a specialized field of study that wants to communicate knowledge in a certain way. Structure is not something every department, discipline, and paper approaches the same way.

In most schools, teachers will often ask their students to follow a specified format. And that should make the whole structure issue a lot less challenging. Other times, you’ll have to use the standard structure preferred for different types of papers. For example, a case study in nursing might favor a different presentation than a research paper.

The Style of Top Nursing Papers

What’s style? Style refers to how you write. It’s how you write your sentences. It’s how you use language and literary devices such as idioms and phrasal verbs to convey your message. Here are a couple rules you want to keep in mind:

Use the Simplest Language You Can

Don’t be like most academic writers who end up with grades you wouldn’t want. Avoid using big, pretentious words in an attempt to sound more intelligent. Use clear, precise language. Use the fewest words possible. Pretension is not a requirement in technical writing. But you should be able to use technical or sophisticated terminology and language whenever necessary.

Avoid Qualifiers and Intensifiers

Qualifiers are words such as maybe, appears to be, or perhaps. In some situations, it’s all right to use qualifiers. But they’re something you should avoid most of the time. Intensifiers are another category of words you must avoid. Intensifiers are words that add emphasis to something you’ve written.

A common intensifier you’ve probably used countless times is “really.” For example, the data collected really proved that……” Do you think the meaning of this sentence would change if you omitted “really“? Look at this: “The data collected proved that…”Now, doesn’t that look clear enough? You must avoid intensifiers and qualifiers if you want top nursing papers.

Avoid the Passive Voice for Top Nursing Papers

Text prepared in the active voice reads better than content created using the passive voice. That said, there are instances you can’t avoid passive voice. When writing the methods section, you’ll likely use the passive voice. That said, you want to avoid the passive voice as much as possible. Instead of “The subjects were injected with substance X by the researcher,” write “The researcher injected the subjects with substance X.” The second sentence seems more compelling.

Avoid Contractions, Adjectives, Adverbs, and Redundancy

Well-trained nursing writers never use contractions in their papers. They don’t write “it’s, don’t, shouldn’t, or mightn’t.” Contractions fit in best with informal writing. While you can use adverbs and adjectives, you must not use them liberally. “The patient tightly held the nurse’s hand” is a good sentence. But saying “The patient gripped the nurse’s hand” is more concise.

Redundancy is all about using repetitions. Repetitions are rarely necessary. Sometimes, people use redundant phrases in an attempt to help readers remember something critical they (writers) said. But you must avoid such words and phrases if you want sharper writing that earns you top grades. Why write the “test was absolutely necessary?” The word “necessary” here adds no value. You must eliminate such words and phrases during the editing process.
