Typhoid fever, also known simply as typhoid, is a life-threatening bacterial infection caused by a specific type of Salmonella. Symptoms begin 6 to 30 days after exposure. It varies from mild to severe cases if not treated. There is a gradual onset of a high fever over several days. Symptoms include fever, abdominal pain, headache, vomiting, diarrhea, cough, or constipation. A confirmed case had Typhi isolated from blood, stool, or rectal swab culture.
