I always make emphasis on the growing health needs patients and due to that “the education, accreditation, certification, and licensure of APRNs need to be effectively aligned in order to continue to ensure patient safety while expanding patient access to APRNs” (Consensus Model for APRN Regulation, 2008, p.5).  As we know, the APRN legal scope of practice and the criteria for entry into advanced practice are determined by the state in which the candidate lives. In other words “The states require that all APRNs carry current licensure as RNs.  Authority to practice as an APRN is tied to the scope of practice and varies from state to state, depending on the degree of practice autonomy that the APRN is granted” (Hamric, Hanson, Tracy & O’Grady, 2014, p.560).  That being said, in the state of Maryland, advanced practice nursing status is granted based on the educational level and certification of the individual applying for the licensure.  However, certification varies by specialty (NursingLicensure.org, 2017).

A new model that improves practice parameters and patient safety in my state is the “Full Practice Authority Act was passed in 2015 to allow APRN’s to practice independently” (NursingLicensure.org, 2017).  In this act, the APRN understands his/her roles in prescribing medications, and that she/he will be held liable if prescribe medications harm patients’ health.  Again, under this Act, APRN has right not to participate in patient care that is again the APRN moral autonomy and must demonstrate how to collaborate care with other physicians or advanced practitioners.  Again, “APRNs who plan to prescribe or dispense controlled substances will need to apply for a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) number, as required by federal and state policy” (www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov,cited in Hamric, Hanson, Tracy & O’Grady, 2014, p.561)

Again, another parameter that I observe is that new applicants who have never been certified as a CRNP in the state of Maryland or any other state must have a mentor name his/her application for certification, and that mentor may be a certified Maryland CRNP or Licensed Maryland physician” (Maryland Board of Nursing, 2017). This requirement can delay the release on the applicant license, so it is advisable to keep a list of mentors throughout the nursing program.
