Isabel Adams Hampton Robb was born in 1860 in Ontario, Canada. “She taught in Ontario for three years before coming to New York in 1881 to attend the Bellevue Hospital Training School for Nurses” (Hostuler, Kennedy, Mason, & Schorr, 1999, para. 1). This paper will look at the major social issues that occurred while Robb was alive, the contributions she made to nursing, and how those contributions influenced nursing today.

Major Social Issues

One major social issue that happened during the time of Isabel Adams Hampton Robb was the rise of industrial America. “Between 1880 and 1900, cities in the United States grew at a dramatic rate” (City Life in the Late 19th Century, 2016, para. 1). While a lot of the population growth in the cities was due to Immigrants that arrived from around the world, there were a lot of people moving from rural areas into the cities. Another social issue that happened while Isabel Hampton Robb was alive was women’s suffrage. “During the late 1800s and early 1900s, women and women’s organizations not only worked to gain the right to vote, they also worked for broad-based economic and political equality and for social reforms” (Women’s Suffrage in the Progressive Era, 2016, para. 2).

Contributions to Nursing

Isabel Adams Hampton Robb had always focused more on the academic part of nursing rather than the clinical. After spending time in Italy as a Superintendent of a hospital “her conviction grew that nurses needed a solid theoretical education—a belief that was not well accepted by the medical community of the time” (Catalano, 32). From then on she dedicated her life to raising the standards of nursing education in the United States. At the age of 26 she was made “superintendent of the Illinois Training School in Chicago, where she was recognized for teaching students instead of only using them for staffing” (Hostuler, et al, 1999, para. 2). Another contribution made to nursing was her part in founding the Nurses’ Associated Alumnae of the United States and Canada, which eventually because the American Nurses Association, in 1896. Influences on Nursing Today

Robb’s focus and conviction that nurse’s needed a more solid education has had a lasting effect. “Some of her unique ideas for the time were to develop and implement a grading policy for nursing students that required nurses to prove their abilities in order to be awarded a diploma” (Catalano 32). Back in Robb’s time the idea of grading nursing students for them to prove their abilities was strange but for nurses today it is something that is expected of them. Robb’s work “was instrumental in creating the organizational structure that would provide permanent national leadership for the nursing profession” (The Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, 2016, para. 6). When the American Nurses Association was first created (then known as the Nurses’ Associated Alumnae of the United States and Canada) it was partly due to Robb’s goal of having an organization that included all nurses. That goal was realized and today the ANA represents the nation’s 3.6 million nurses. “ANA advances the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting a safe and ethical work environment, bolstering the health and wellness of nurses, and advocating on health care issues that affect nurses and the public” (About ANA, 2016, para. 1).

Isabel Adams Hampton Robb was a world-shattering woman in the nursing profession at a time when women didn’t have many rights. Known as the founder of modern nursing, Isabel revolutionized the field of nursing in many ways. Among the numerous contributions, Isabel made one such significant contribution was the writing of the book, Nursing: Its Principals and Practices, for Hospital and Private Use which was published in 1893. A second noteworthy contribution was helping to establish the first postgraduate collegiate program for nurses at Columbia University per an article written on the Johns Hopkins Nursing website. Born Isabel Adams Hampton in Welland, Ontario on August 26, 1859, Isabel had a short-lived career as a public-school instructor before setting out for Bellevue Training School for Nurses in New York in 1881 at the age of twenty-one. “Upon graduation in 1883, she substituted for the superintendent of nurses at the Woman’s Hospital in New York, then worked two years at St. Paul’s House in Rome, which offered care to wealthy travelers. Back in the States, she served as a private duty nurse before becoming superintendent of the Illinois Training School for Nurses at Cook County Hospital in Chicago in 1886. Then, it was on to Johns Hopkins” (E. 2013).

Besting over fifty other applicants for the job (eighty in total), Isabel became the first superintendent of nurses at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1889; at a time when women didn’t even have the right to vote this was quite the accomplishment. For a young woman at the mere age of thirty, Isabel was quite tenacious, while holding the title of superintendent she also held the position of principal of the new nurse training school.
