Qualitative Study

Barbeau, A., Burda, J. & Siegel, M. (2013). Perceived efficacy of e-cigarettes versus nicotine replacement therapy among successful e-cigarette users: a qualitative approach. Addict Sci Clin Pract., 8, 5.

Background of Study:

The study intended to compare the performance of e-cigarettes against nicotine replacement therapy with regards to successfully quitting smoking. It begins with a concession that nicotine is an addictive psychoactive substance. It then adds that smoking addicts show dependence on both the nicotine substance as a chemical and the smoking behavior. Qualitative Research Critique and Ethical Considerations sample essay. This is then followed by evidence from secondary sources to show that nicotine has been successful in improving the initial quitting rates, but has failed to sustain the large quit figures for the long term. Following this awareness, the study proposes that e-cigarettes could improve outcomes by sustaining the smoking behavior even as nicotine replacement therapy offers a solution for the nicotine chemical dependence. As such, the study seeks to provide qualitative evidence that would be used to support the use of e-cigarettes in combination with nicotine replacement therapy to ensure that high quit figures are realized and the figures are sustained for the long term.

Method of Study:

To address the study needs, the research applied a qualitative research approach. This entailed collecting primary information using focus group discussions. 11 participants were recruited to include 9 men and 2 women who used e-cigarettes. They were expected to answer open-ended questions that collected information on their experiences with using e-cigarettes, comparing the effectiveness of e-cigarettes and nicotine replacement therapy, quitting barriers, and reasons for using e-cigarettes when compared to other nicotine quitting strategies. The qualitative approach applied in the study is appropriate since it allowed the research to collect primary data from the population of interest. Besides that, the collected primary data shows a good link with the secondary data from the literature review. The information from the two sources are complementary, showing a good progression from the known to unknown. Additionally, the secondary information was collected from 19 sources that included peer reviewed and authoritative publications Qualitative Research Critique and Ethical Considerations sample essay.

Results of Study

The research results present five themes with regards to e-cigarettes. Firstly, e-cigarettes are used because they address the behavioral aspect of smoking minus nicotine. Secondly, they allow smokers to maintain their social identity as smokers without really smoking cigarettes. Thirdly, they allow smoking quitters to approach smoking as a hobby. Fourthly, it allows smoking quitters to maintain their personal identity as smokers. Qualitative Research Critique and Ethical Considerations sample essay. Finally, it allows for a clear distinction between smokers and nicotine users. Additionally, e-cigarettes are shown to be more effective in preventing quitting relapse when compared to nicotine replacement therapy. These results are important to nursing practitioners by allowing them to identify a more effective cigarette quitting approach. These results can be used as evidence for recommending e-cigarettes use over nicotine replacement therapy. Qualitative Research Critique and Ethical Considerations sample essay.

Ethical Considerations

Although there is no mention of whether the participants signed a consent form before inclusion in the study, the fact that participation was voluntary makes the need for a consent form redundant since they could quit at any time. Additionally, the study design and process was approved after review by the Boston University Medical Campus Institutional Review Board to show that the researcher had presented sufficient evidence of intention to protect the participants’ rights to include the right to privacy. Other evidence of this is seen in the fact that the participants’ identities were not disclosed and all information was presented anonymously.

Conclusion

The research applied a qualitative approach to denote the importance of behavioral and social components in smoking cessation programs. It concedes that although nicotine replacement therapy has been effective for quitting, it has been ineffective for the long term. In this case, e-cigarettes is shown to be more effective in addressing the behavioral and social components of smoking cessation. As such, the research results support the use of e-cigarettes as a better alternative to nicotine replacement therapy in facilitating smoking cessation.
